Granite City, IL brings neighbors
together in a beautiful outdoor setting.
A custom grate heats up a
Connecticut evening. (Between
our Compact and Standard sizes).
This large grate is loaded with
logs placed end-to-end.
(See our double arms.)
This cover was custom-made for our Standard grate with Tudor finials which add 5″ to the height of the grate.
With the growing popularity of outdoor fireplaces, we receive many requests for grates to be used outdoors. We’re sometimes asked,“Does it work outside?” Indeed it does. Our customers report significantly increased heat in their outdoor spaces compared to their previous grates. “We had to move our chairs back from the fireplace” is one of the comments we hear most frequently, and the owner of the fireplace on the right told us exactly that.
Are outdoor grates different than those used indoors? Outdoor fireplaces are typically built much deeper than indoor fireplaces, and our customers often ask if their grate should be deeper to help fill that space. Our response: filling the larger depth is unnecessary. However, we’re happy to add 2” to the depth if you choose to customize it. Contact us if that’s your preference.
The Texas Fireframe grate was designed to deliver significant heat with a depth of 14” or 16”, depending on which size you select. We’ve built custom grates up to 18” deep, but we don’t recommend going deeper than that because the upper arms are also deeper and must hold more wood; the extra depth makes them heavier, requiring more effort to adjust up and down. We typically don’t add more than 2” of depth to our 14” deep standard grate. More often, our outdoor grates are not customized except for an extra coat of paint.
We recommend requesting an extra coat of paint for grates used outdoors. It’s just $5. You’ll see that option near the bottom of the Fireplace Grate Store page where you order your grate. You can add touch-ups or another coat of paint in the future. Flat black, high heat, aerosol paint is available at any major hardware store. Look for “rust resistant.” Rust-Oleum is one brand. If your outdoor fireplace gets wet inside, you may want to put a plastic cover over your grate when it’s not in use, after it has completely cooled down. (Scroll down to order a custom cover.) Or keep it well protected with the high heat paint.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about a Texas Fireframe grate for your outdoor fireplace.
Order a waterproof cover for your outdoor grate.
You can order your custom cover directly from a manufacturer that we recommend. Please follow our instructions below on how to order. First, go to:
https://alcocovers.com/product/custom-furniture-covers/
Then scroll down to “Select your shape” and select the letter “P.” Fill in your grate’s exact measurements. The manufacturer will add 1″ to 1.5″ leeway so you can slide the cover on and off easily. Measure from the OUTER EDGE of the movable arms, for the proper width. If you have finials, be sure to include them in the overall height, width and depth measurements. Add a few inches to measurement “D” if you wish to leave the adjustable arms in a raised position, and not slide them down between fires. Select your preferred vinyl weight which will affect longevity of your cover. Both are waterproof. Then select a color. Splits and tie-downs are not necessary. Continue filling out form, then you’ll see your quote, and you’re ready to place your order!
Viewing the custom cover from the side, you can see how it matches the shape of the Texas Fireframe grate. Shown in black and in the heavier of two weights. It’s easy to order direct from the manufacturer using the instructions provided above. This cover was about $40.
